In this episode…
…a conversation about where the concept of ‘home’ can be found, with Adele.
Quite quickly after first meeting Adele, she asked: “Do you think Dutch people are interested in our stories?” A question bubbling up from the perspective of a perceptive person, who wants a safe place to build a life. A home to live an autonomous life, that includes exploring the talents developed and the knowledge she has acquired.
Adele was programmed to build a home in people.“Home is in the people that we love.” But what happens when the people that loved you have passed away, and the conservative, mysogynist society you have to function in does not allow you to exercise your agency - because of your gender. Are you then suddenly home-less?
Coming to the Netherlands and applying for asylum, the slow move through a system designed to discourage world-building and home-making brought these questions back to the fore. Where is home? What is home? Who is home? Can a body be a home? And is that enough?
Adele shares what her position on creating a home is like nowadays, as well as how she arrived there. She ends with volunteering a crisp observation, about how you can tell when Dutch people are ready to call a place a home; that’s “when they are ready to make holes in the wall.”
On 25 Februari 2027 this conversation will be launched as episode 10.
