In this episode…
…a conversation with Reijer Jan, about how taught self-sufficiency can lead to an inability to ask for support.
This conversation is valuable, for the sheer openness with which Reijer Jan is willing to unpack the familial, patriarchal, mysogynistic, and cultural messaging that have taught him to always persevere. No matter what. No exceptions. He self-admittedly and actively refuses to ask for help.
Interestingly, our conversation took place some twelve weeks after his left knee joint was replaced by a titanium prothesis. With this procedure just behind him and the experience of needing care freshly etched in his mind, he analyses his language use and patterns of behavior regarding support. As Reijer Jan questions the emotions that accompany his ‘must do it myself’ attitude, his professional skills of reflection and inter-relational knowledge building come to the fore. Grab the popcorn and relax, with this open chat about cultural conditioning in NL.
On 18 February 2027 this conversation will be launched as episode 9.
Reijer Jan van ’t Hul
Reijer Jan is the owner of WeerZin Supervision & Coaching and co-owner of Buro Schoolwerk. He lives in Zwolle with his husband Chris. He loves going to concerts and festivals with a group of close friends, preparing and tasting haute cuisine, bicycling and a weekly visit to the local art house movie theatre.
In his work the focus is on developing awareness of one’s own behavior and how it relates to the behavior of others —colleagues, clients, students, parents or network partners.
He supports clients as they become aware of their own communication styles, strengths and pitfalls. Offering ways to change behavior and, in doing so, influence the behavior of others.
